Lewy Body Dementia: Understanding and Supporting Those Affected

Spring Retirement sheds light on Lewy body dementia, the second most common age-related dementia. Learn about its impact, current research, and how you can support those affected on World Lewy Body Day 28th January 2025.

What is Lewy Body Dementia?

Lewy body dementia (LBD) is a neurodegenerative condition caused by abnormal protein deposits in the brain. These deposits, called Lewy bodies, disrupt brain functions related to memory, movement, mood, and cognition. LBD accounts for 10-15% of all dementia cases, making it the second most prevalent type of age-related dementia.

World Lewy Body Day 2025

On 28 January 2025, the second annual World Lewy Body Day will take place. The Lewy Body Society, the UK's only charity dedicated exclusively to LBD, is publishing their Lewy List. This initiative calls on the government to improve the lives of approximately 100,000 people affected by LBD across the country.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Accurate diagnosis of LBD is crucial for proper treatment and support. However, misdiagnosis is common due to similarities with other conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Recent advancements in brain imaging techniques, such as MEG, MRI, and PET scans, are helping researchers identify LBD more accurately.Treatment options for LBD include:

  • Cholinesterase inhibitors to improve cognitive symptoms
  • Levodopa for movement problems (used cautiously)
  • Antidepressants for mood-related issues
  • Non-drug interventions like physiotherapy and cognitive stimulation therapy

Sign the Lewy List Petition

Spring Retirement urges everyone to support the Lewy List petition, a critical initiative to improve the lives of LBD patients. By signing the petition, you can help demand four essential rights:

  1. Improved access to specialist healthcare
  2. Better support for families and caregivers
  3. Increased funding for LBD research
  4. Enhanced public awareness and understanding

The petition takes just moments to complete and can be found at https://www.lewybody.org/support-our-lewy-list-demands-for-action-on-world-lewy-body-day/

How You Can Help

To support those living with LBD and their families:

  1. Sign the Lewy List petition demanding basic rights for LBD patients
  2. Spread awareness on social media and within your community
  3. Participate in or donate to LBD-focused charities and support groups
  4. Advocate for increased recognition and support for LBD patients

By working together, we can improve the lives of those affected by Lewy body dementia and contribute to creating a more supportive environment for patients and their families.
